It may not be farm livin? but it's still the place to be for life science companies such as Novartis AG, Sequenom, The Scripps Research Institute, and Verenium Corp. They're tenants in Nautilus, which held its grand opening last week in Torrey Pines. (The campus is named for the spiral shell-shaped sea creature.) Alexandria Real Estate Equities developed and owns the 220k SF, four-building complex, which features a proprietary restaurant brand called Green Acre dishing up breakfast and lunch.

The company teamed up with Top Chef alum Brian Malarkey(second from left, with Alexandria EVP Dan Ryan, Mayor Jerry Sanders, and Dr. David Webb from Scripps) to create Green Acre for Nautilus and other Alexandria campuses in San Diego. Many of the ingredients will be sourced from the complex's onsite organic garden. Cassidy Turley San Diego's Dave Odmark, Jerry Keeney, and Brian Starck handled all of the leasing for Nautilus.

The sustainable redevelopment project (3530-3550 John Hopkins Court and 3535-3565 General Atomics Court) was designed to achieve LEED Gold Core and Shell, including a cool roof and drought-tolerant landscaping. Nautilus also boasts wellness programs offering personal and group training, nutrition info, and physical therapy, as well as creative meeting and event spaces to foster collaboration among the campus? scientists and researchers. (Imagine the parties.) Outdoor spaces include barbecues and ping-pong tables—instead of labs, they get lobs.
