Hosted by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty, the evening honors those who advance solutions to homelessness and poverty. Emmy-award winning ABC7/WJLA-TV reporter Kimberly Suiters emceed.
Here, Sue Vento presents the Bruce F. Vento Award to Sen. Sherrod Brown. He's fought for renters' and veterans' rights, championed legislation for affordable housing policies, and co-sponsored legislation to prevent renters from being unfairly evicted. He also co-sponsored the Veteran Housing Stability Act of 2015, which would increase veterans' access to permanent housing options.
The Pro Bono Counsel Award went to Latham. NLCHP board vice-chair and Carlyle Group managing director Bruce Rosenblum presented it to Latham partner and former DC litigation co-chair Allen Gardner on the firm's behalf.
Sports Illustrated won the Stewart B. McKinney Award, partly for its 2014 cover story, "Young, Gifted and Homeless." Bobby Limon, Personal Achievement Honoree, was one of the homeless student athletes featured in the article. He went on to become a Division 1 college football player.
Past McKinney-Vento honorees include Rep. Barney Frank, Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith and Sen. Patty Murray.
