Half of Dodd-Frank

Send us your story tips: roksana@bisnow.com.

Half of the duo behind Dodd-Frank was on hand at the 13th Annual McKinney-Vento Awards Reception last week (as were we, to capture these photos).
Rep. Barney Frank at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel
Before a full room at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel, the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty honored Rep. Barney Frank, above, and other folks and organizations that have helped advance solutions to homelessness and poverty. The awards also pay tribute to Reps. Stewart McKinney and Bruce Vento, who helped create the first major federal legislation to tackle homelessness.

We snapped Rep. Frank, a 30-year Congressional vet and former House Financial Services Committee chairman, talking about how the military budget affects the effort to prevent homelessness. He tells us that the military budget should be decreased by $225-250B per year, and the army ought to pull out from Iraq and Afghanistan, in order to maintain money for homeless initiatives.
Maria Foscarinis, Barney Frank, and Susan Vento
National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty’s exec. director, Maria Foscarinis (who worked closely with Reps. Vento and McKinney to create the landmark law) and Susan Vento present Rep. Frank with the Bruce F. Vento Award. The representative says he was "most grateful" to be chosen for the award.
DLA Piper’s Roberta Ritvo at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel
Laura Evans of Fox 5 News was the benefit's emcee, but had to run to cover the hikers freed from Iran’s Evin Prison. We snapped DLA Piper senior pro bono counsel Roberta Ritvo offering acceptance remarks after receiving a 2011 Pro Bono Counsel Award on behalf of the firm. Other honorees included the U.S. Human Rights Fund (Stewart B. McKinney Award) and Rob Robinson (Personal Achievement Award).

G.W. Rolle, left, presents Rob Robinson, right, with the personal achievement award. G.W. is a former winner himself. Both men experienced homelessness for a time—Rob spent almost three years on the streets in Miami and NYC, after which he became a special advisor to the Campaign to Restore National Housing Rights and a founding member of the Take Back the Land movement. Since then, he's also worked with the Law Center during America’s Universal Periodic Review last, spoke before the Human Rights Council in Geneva, and was NYC chairman for the inaugural visit of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing.

SG Gets Schooled
Walter Dellinger
In celebration of Constitution Day, the fourth graders at Ross Elementary School in Dupont Circle got a lesson on the Constitution from one of its best experts. Former SG and assistant AG Walter Dellinger (now partner at O’Melveny, where he heads the Supreme Court and Appellate Practice Clinic) spoke with students about their own rights to free speech, explaining that he was a clerk for then-Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black when Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District was heard by the court.

The kids posed terrific questions, with one asking how Hispanic children were treated in the pre-Brown v. Board of Education segregated school system. Dellinger visited the school as part of the American Constitution Society’s Constitution in the Classroom program, which sends lawyers and law students to public schools around the country to teach students about the founding document’s fundamental principles. And they want you to know: volunteers for the program are welcome.
