It’s Sunday morning in Annapolis and you’re waking up a little sunburnt from a day on the water. We’ve handpicked two brunch spots worth visiting before making the drive back to DC. Preserve on Main Street offers a short but sweet menu, the star of which is a comforting bowl of fried eggs, roasted vegetables and peppery arugula atop creamy grits. You can also get everything from chicken pot pie to cinnamon chip French toast. Michelle and Jeremy Hoffman, the couple behind the restaurant, are a bit of a culinary dream team. Jeremy, for example, spent time at Nobu 57 and Per Se, and it shows.

Right up the road from Preserve, Miss Shirley’s Cafe brings Southern charm while highlighting the best of Maryland. Excess is not a concern for the chefs who really pile it on. Take this Southern Slammer Sandwich for example, with fried green tomatoes, bacon, avocado mash, cheddar cheese and a fried egg on pumpernickel. This is tame compared to the Soft Shell Feller Benedict. If a boozy brunch is in order, the Born on the Bay-O Bloody Mary is an Instagram shot waiting to happen given its toppings: blackened shrimp, Tasso ham, Andouille sausage, cheddar, pickled okra, tomato, celery and an Old Bay rim.
