Two proposals aimed at reeling in the rise in Airbnb listings in the District have been described as the strictest in the country.

The proposed regulations would limit hosts to renting rooms in occupied units rather than whole apartments or houses. Individual Airbnb hosts would also be capped at a maximum of five listings with none located in the same building. The proposals, which are backed by the city’s hotel industry, would impact up to 65% of current Airbnb listings in the District, reports Curbed. DC has the third-highest number of Airbnb listings per capita, behind only New Orleans and San Francisco.

While the proposed regulations could cause the number of listings in the District to plummet, the company’s meteoric growth shows no signs of slowing down. This past summer, more than 17 million guests chose to book stays through Airbnb as opposed to traditional hotels. [Curbed]
