DC’s wave of construction is very much a private-sector affair, a fact that bodes well for the region’s continued economic diversification and health.

It's also a boon for local construction outfit TEEL Construction, founder and president Parker Teel (above on the right, along with Spencer Teel) says.

“Washington continues to have major construction growth even with the reduced federal spending; you don’t have to look far for a construction crane,” he says. “It’s not boom time but I think everyone is busy.”

TEEL’s been lucky enough to pick up a lot of contracts in this development climate, including The Kitchen by Wolfgang Puck at IAD and Harbor Grill at BWI.

In addition to airport projects, it's building six new Aldi grocery stores and a few office projects in the metro area, including Huge, Inc. at Union Market. Almost all of those contracts were obtained from long-time clients, says Spencer, a VP at TEEL.

“Currently, 93% of our projects in progress are for repeat or referred clients, which is consistent with our historical averages,” he says.

“Finding quality customers and earning their business is hard work,” he adds. “Once we’re in with a new customer we like to keep them happy—that’s the easy part.”

As a capstone for the nearly 30 years TEEL’s been in business, the firm recently moved its headquarters from Great Falls to the courthouse area of Fairfax.
