What Goes Up Must Come Down: New DC Condo Gets Demo'd

A brand-new condo building that faced initial skepticism for towering over surrounding homes is being torn down, but not for the reason you would think. It turns out the condo at 1744 D St NE (pictured) was built over an aging water tunnel, putting the entire neighborhood in danger of catastrophic flooding. Developer Edge Investments claims it had all the proper permits before constructing the building, but the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs claims those permit applications contained misrepresentations, NBC4 Washington reports. DC Water has already made repairs to the sewer, but there is still a risk of further damage. Now neighbors who watched the building go up will have to watch it come back down. And to add insult to injury, if it turns out the District made an error, the burden to pay could fall on local taxpayers or DC Water customers. [NBC4]
