Single-family housing still dominates many parts of upper Northwest D.C., but one Wisconsin Avenue corner could soon welcome a new six-story building.

Preservation DC LLC filed an application with the Board of Zoning Adjustments earlier this month to build a six-story building with eight apartments at 3219 Wisconsin Ave. NW.

The site at the corner of Wisconsin Avenue and Macomb Street sits one block south of the Cathedral Commons mixed-use project, featuring a Giant grocery store and several other retailers. The lot is currently occupied by a single-family house.

The developer plans to relocate the house from the corner of the site to the eastern portion of the lot facing Macomb Street, where it would sit next to a row of other single-family houses. It would then replace the house on the corner site with a 74-foot-tall multifamily building. Designed by Teass Warren Architects, the building would be roughly the same height as nearby buildings along Wisconsin Avenue.

Advocates have called for more dense multifamily development in traditionally low-rise parts of Northwest D.C. to help tackle the housing affordability crisis. But many projects, including Cathedral Commons, have faced backlash from neighborhood residents opposed to new development in the area.
