Real estate developer Larry Brandt passed away Monday while undergoing treatment stemming from heart surgery this past December.

His career in real estate spanned more than five decades, starting with simple one-off projects and eventually expanding his reach to include entire communities. Brandt, 89, is survived by his wife, Evelyn, sons Robert and Andrew, and daughter Lisa Beek, the Washington Business Journal reports.

He was the founder of DC-based Lawrence N. Brandt Inc, with a focus geared towards townhouse and condominium development. While Brandt mainly focused on the residential side of development, he did contribute some noteworthy projects on the commercial side, including the HQ for the National Association of Realtors. The building, located at 500 New Jersey Ave NW, was a $46M project featuring a sleek exterior design and glass-wrapped façade.

Brandt passed oversight of the firm along to his son Robert several years ago, but remained active in the industry, serving as a board member and minority owner of McEnearney Associates, founded by his longtime friend John McEnearney, who passed away in 2014 at the age of 87. Funeral services for Larry Brandt are scheduled for 1pm Feb. 28 at Washington Hebrew Congregation. [WBJ]
