New multifamily developments near Metro stations in Arlington County can now have fewer parking spaces.
The Arlington County Board Saturday approved new guidelines that allow developers to swap out parking spaces for bicycle and car-sharing options, ARLnow reports.
The change will apply to new Metro-accessible projects on the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor and in Crystal City and Pentagon City. The minimum parking requirements vary based on the proximity to Metro, and the board still has to approve the parking ratio for each individual project.
“These guidelines reflect the fact that the increase in transportation options in our Metro corridors means that some new developments will require less parking,” Arlington County Board Chair Jay Fisette said in a release.
Many developers are reconsidering the way they use parking garages as people increasingly favor modes of transportation other than cars. Large bike storage rooms have become more common around the country, and some developers have created their own bike-sharing systems.
