As the office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development wraps up 2016, it named another winner for one of its development objectives: The Menkiti Group.

The developer, helmed by Bo Menkiti, will lead the development of the MLK Gateway parcel in Anacostia, at the corner with Good Hope Road SE, with plans to build more than 50k SF. The key piece of the proposal: a tech incubator expected to bring hundreds of high-quality jobs to Ward 8, led by Enlightened, Menkiti's partner in the bid process. Enlightened also plans to move its HQ to the project, bringing 200 jobs with it.

MLK Gateway was one of five projects deputy mayor Brian Kenner presented to the development community in March, along with the Crummell School, which was picked up by StonebridgeCarras last month. The other projects—1125 Spring Road NW, the air rights over a two-acre parking deck near Capitol Crossing, and a parking lot that can support up to 800 units—are still uncommitted.

MLK Gateway will have a little more than 28k SF of office and 22k SF of retail, including storefronts for Filter Coffee, Good Food Markets, Smith Commons and City First Bank. Menkiti Residential and a Keller Williams brokerage office—both entities that are under Bo Menkiti's control—will have locations in the project, which also includes adjacent land already owned by the Menkiti Group.
