A design has been selected for the first phase of The JBG Cos 1.2M SF development with Gallaudet University.

After holding a three-stage design competition, the partnership chose the proposal from Ireland-based Hall McKnight, whose concept design is rendered above.

The four-phase development will be on university-owned land along 6th Street NE, adjacent to Union Market. The first phase calls for 1,800 residential units, including an affordable component, 134k SF of retail and 63k SF of office.

The project will be the first to feature Gallaudet's "DeafSpace" design principles to construct an environment aimed at accommodating those with hearing disabilities.

“We approached this project striving to achieve a balance between historic and innovative design," JBG EVP Robin Mosle said in a release.

The Union Market area has plenty of other development in the pipeline, including Edens' 432-unit apartment complex at 1270 4th St NE and Kettler's 1.2M SF Market Terminal development.
