Akridge has provided an updated timeline for its massive Burnham Place project over the tracks behind Union Station.
Akridge VP of Development David Tuchmann spoke with the ANC 6C Planning, Zoning, and Economic Development Committee on Wednesday, Urban Turf reports. The company will focus its efforts on creating a plan of action to meet the various requirements for the massive project and provide the public with a status update this fall. The master plan for the project should be introduced to the public in summer 2017, with approval expected to stretch well into 2018.
The Burnham Place project is part of the transformative redevelopment of Union Station. The total development will be spread across 14 acres bounded by the Metro tracks, Station Place and the Railway Express Building. Plans call for a 3M SF development that will include 100k SF of retail, 1,300 residential units and more than 500 hotel rooms, plus parks and plazas.
Akridge secured the air rights for the project back in 2002 for $10M, and has committed to an additional $1.5M in funding. Shalome Baranes has been tasked with design for Burnham Place, while Grimshaw Architects will handle the Union Station portion.
Akridge will have plenty to keep itself busy with in the interim. Last month, the company acquired the Humane Society’s national HQ in the West End for $11M, with an eye towards plans for another trophy office building. [UT]
