A multibuilding, mixed-use development proposed for Bailey's Crossroads is moving forward following a community meeting in Fairfax County this week.

The owner of the Food Star property at 5521 Leesburg Pike is proposing three 14- or- 15-story residential towers with ground-floor retail on a 9-acre site fronting Leesburg Pike. The project, totaling about 1,120 units, would also include mid-rise buildings and 45 townhouses.

In order to proceed with development, though, the site would need to go through a comprehensive plan amendment and rezoning process. The existing zoning for the property would allow 500 units at most in buildings reaching less than half of the proposed height.

The Board of Supervisors agreed to take up consideration of a comprehensive plan amendment in May, and it heard reactions to the proposal at a community meeting on Monday, Annandale Today reported.

An attorney for property owner George Hong said his client was "ready to go forward" at the meeting. The Board of Supervisors expects to hold additional public meetings related to the project this spring or summer, according to Annandale Today.

Construction is reportedly still several years away, as the project would first need approval of the comprehensive plan amendment and would then go through the rezoning process.
