The incident sent three construction workers and a driver to the hospital with minor injuries, city of Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Chief Robert Hevia said at a press conference at the scene.

Emergency workers responded to a vehicle fire at SE 12th Street and Brickell Bay Drive at 8:06 a.m. local time Monday.

A woman driving a white BMW southbound saw the rig begin to fall and reversed her vehicle, but couldn't avoid it, Hevia said. She escaped the car after it caught fire.

The rig also fell onto a Container Express box, trapping two construction workers inside. Firefighters cut through the box to free the workers, ages 27 and 29, before they were taken to the hospital.

The rig was being used to drill into the ground as part of a deep soil mixing process, city of Miami firefighters spokesperson Pete Sanchez told Bloomberg.

The incident happened at 1201 Brickell Bay Drive, where billionaire Ken Griffin is building his hedge fund's $2.5B headquarters, with more than 1M SF of office space for Citadel and third-party companies seeking to move to Miami.

Ken Griffin is building a $2.5B headquarters for his hedge fund, Citadel, at 1221 Brickell Bay Drive in Miami.

Griffin spent more than $770M to assemble a full city block in Brickell for the project in July. Citadel Chief Workplace Officer Paul Darrah told Bisnow in June that the company planned to go vertical by the end of this year.

A Citadel representative directed inquiries to Related Cos., the development partner on the project.

It is still unclear what caused the rig to fall, but a spokesperson for the New York-based developer said Related Cos. was "working in full cooperation with City and County building departments to secure the site and conduct a full investigation of today’s incident."

"We and our construction partners are tremendously grateful to Miami emergency services for their quick response and support," the spokesperson said. "Our number one priority is the health and safety of our workers and the community."
