Plans Advance For Seattle University Innovation Center, Student Housing

Seattle University's Center for Science and Innovation is moving forward on plans for the university's Capitol Hill campus, according to a Jan. 9 design progress report.

The 110K SF academic building at 12th Avenue and East Marion Street will include four stories of lab space for the College of Science and Engineering, space for faculty and students to work together and for collaboration with businesses, nonprofits and the community, Capitol Hill Times reports.

The ground floor will house the 2,300 SF Center for Community Engagement, which supports early learning, youth organizations, arts and healthcare access. The 450 SF Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center will support local startups. The ground floor will also include a 1,120 SF makerspace.

The university services in the building that will be razed for the center are shifting to the university's new student housing project at 12th and Madison. University Services will be on the bottom two floors of that 10-story building at 1107 East Madison.

The new student housing is aimed at helping the university reach its enrollment goals, Capitol Hill Times reports. Students have the challenge of high rents in the area around the university, creating high demand for on-campus housing. That project is expected to be ready for occupation by the fall.

The Center for Science and Innovation could begin construction in June 2019 to open in fall 2021.
