The Alameda City Council will meet tonight to vote on new housing measures that could prevent rent increases and increase tenant protections.
Previous meetings on the topic have been contentious, with one meeting interrupted by an altercation that resulted in police wrestling one man to the ground and two arrests.
The city council will vote on three ordinances:
Strengthening the city's rent review process, limiting evictions and requiring landlords to help pay tenant moving costs for some evictions;
Rent stabilization, limiting evictions and moving costs;
Rent stabilization and moving costs while prohibiting "no-cause" evictions.
Alameda currently has a 65-day moratorium on rent increases of 8% or more and halting evictions without just cause that the city council could extend through Feb. 18. Any new ordinance voted in tonight would take effect on that date.
