New Kensington Community Development Corp has kicked off redevelopment plans to transform an old building into a mixed-use project with 51 apartment units and 1,000 SF of retail.
The project at Ruth and Somerset streets, the former Orinoka Mills textile factory, will be called Orinoka Civic House, and will include affordable housing. The community group asked the city to buy the property at sheriff’s sale three years ago, a move that allowed the group to devise a plan for it, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The city’s office of housing and community development, among other city and state groups, also helped put together the plan. [PBJ]
