MakerBot opened its new, expanded 170k SF space at Industry City Wednesday, even though the 3D printer manufacturer closed its three retail stores and laid off about 20% of its workforce in April. The space is about triple the footprint of the company’s previous digs at IC, and production of 3D printers is expected to double, according to Crain’s. The expansion will be part of a push to focus energy on producing 3D printers for educational institutions as part of a shift away from B2C sales.
