Fresh off its seismic acquisition of Whole Foods, e-commerce giant Amazon looks poised to make waves once again with its first-ever large distribution center in New York.
Amazon, always on the hunt to decrease cost and increase efficiency on shipping, has agreed to locate a 975K SF fulfillment center on the west coast of Staten Island, taking one of four planned warehouses on a site owned by Matrix Development Group, the New York Post reports.
No specifics of the deal were released, and neither Matrix nor Amazon would publicly confirm the move, but the Post expects a formal announcement to come in the next two months. To this point in New York City, Amazon had only opened two small Prime Now locations for small, time-sensitive deliveries: one on 34th Street and one in Brooklyn's Sunset Park.
Last year, the distributor opened up a 141K SF distribution center for food deliveries in Bethpage on Long Island, but a presence the size of the Staten Island lot would allow Amazon unprecedented access to the city for all shapes and sizes of packages — Amazon sells items as big as boats and furniture — to be delivered around the Big Apple within hours.
