It looks like LA's gamble on hosting the 2024 Summer Olympics may not pay off, though the city could host the games four years later.

The International Olympic Committee is leaning toward Paris as the favorite, the Wall Street Journal reports.

LA Mayor Eric Garcetti confirmed he is talking to the IOC about Paris hosting the Olympics first in 2024, KPCC reports. The IOC could award the 2028 Olympics to LA.

For LA, the IOC would help fund youth sports and the local Olympic organizing committee for the additional four years.

The IOC was not expected to make its decision until later in the summer, but may consider a proposal next week for a bid on both cities, something that is rarely done.

That proposal could get an official vote next month.

The last time LA hosted the Summer Olympics was in 1984.
