City Sued Over Sunset Strip Project

Sunset Strip Project

The LA Conservancy is putting the brakes on the Frank Gehry Sunset Strip project by suing the city over its recent approval of the mixed-use project.

As part of the construction of the development, called 8150 Sunset, developer Townscape Partners wants to tear down the Chase Bank on Sunset Boulevard.

The LA Conservancy wants to preserve the 56-year-old bank and has asked the LA Superior Court to stop construction and overturn the prior approval.

It's accusing the City of LA of being in violation of the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA, by not making it mandatory for the bank to be part of the design of the project.

8150 Sunset would consist of five new buildings with 229 residential units and about 60k SF of commercial space.

However, the EIR for the development does have two alternatives that include preserving the bank building, Curbed reports.

The bank building was recommended for landmark status by the LA Cultural Heritage Commission.

It was later forwarded to the LA Planning and Land Use Management Committee, which had postponed its vote before the city approved the project. [Curbed]
