The Reef, a controversial, high-end project in South LA, was just approved by the LA City Council.
It was unanimously approved by the Planning Commission last week and would consist of more than 1,400 condos and apartments.
However, critics have voiced concerns, arguing the residences would be unaffordable for many locals, the LA Times reports.
There is also concern the Reef would drive up local housing prices, pushing out those who live in the neighborhood.
Some residents had wanted 50% of the units to be set aside for affordable housing.
The development, which will be built at the corner of Broadway and Washington Boulevard not far from DTLA, will include a grocery store, a hotel, a fitness center and space for restaurants. [LAT]
