Kaiser Permanente, California’s largest healthcare provider with one-third of the state’s healthcare market, plans to build a new state-of-the-art medical school in Southern California. The Oakland-based nonprofit HMO hasn’t yet selected a site for the new medical school, but aims to begin enrolling students in 2019, according to the LA Times.
Kaiser officials say the medical school will take a much different approach to medical education than traditional medical schools, producing a new generation of physicians that look similar to the community they serve.
The medical school’s curriculum will reflect Kaiser’s commitment to rapid adoption of new technology, adherence to evidence-based medicine, and Kaiser chairman and chief executive Bernard Tyson’s strong belief that educating doctors around a coordinated care model could cure what ails the US medical system.
