The International Olympic Committee officially awarded the 2028 Games to LA Wednesday after its meeting in Lima, Peru.

As expected, Paris was awarded the 2024 Summer Olympics.

It marks the first time two cities have been awarded the games at the same time, ABC News reports.

The announcement was made this morning to much fanfare in Lima. The LA City Council approved the deal for hosting the 2028 games at its meeting in August. That deal includes at least $1.8B from the IOC to LA's Olympic committee with advance payments of $180M for the extra four years of planning and advance payment of $160M for youth sports programs, rather than waiting until after the games.

In anticipation of Wednesday's announcement, dozens of landmarks across Southern California, including the Hollywood Bowl and the U.S. Bank Tower, were lit up last night, as was the Olympic cauldron at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

LA previously hosted the games in 1932 and 1984. The city has been preparing for infrastructure and existing venues to handle the 2028 games.
