The LA City Council just cleared the way for a project that could bring seven acres of affordable housing and park space to South LA.
The motion was unanimously approved last Tuesday to tear down some industrial buildings at 5867 South Los Angeles St. to build the "Slauson and Wall Green Space and Affordable Housing Project," Curbed Los Angeles reports.
The project has been planned since the Community Redevelopment Agency of LA first bought the property seven years ago. An arrangement was made at the time to develop the site, along with TRUST South LA and Abode Communities, into three acres of affordable housing and a four-acre park.
The 120-unit housing project could take five years to build.
City council voted last month for $4.1M to be used to pay for its first phase. The cost includes cleaning up asbestos and lead on the site.
