The Rifles Club, Mayfair
The new Duke of Westminster is taking on the Army reservists, deciding to evict them from their headquarters and develop a posh hotel in its place, the Telegraph reports.
For 140 years, reservists have been stationed at The Rifles Club in Mayfair, opened by the 1st Duke in 1890. The Duke leased the property to the Army for 99 years, later extended to 200 years. But now the Duke, who owns the property after his father’s death in August 2016, has entered negotiations to take back the building and build a luxury hotel in the heart of Mayfair.
The Duke is godfather to Prince George and is Britain’s youngest billionaire, inheriting the bulk of his father’s £8.3B fortune, including a property portfolio with 300 acres in Mayfair and Belgravia.
