Verizon’s $1B mixed-use development in Irving has stalled. The new development will include offices, a new commuter rail station, shops and a hotel. It will accommodate 10,000 employees—if it ever gets off the ground.
Irving officials have held up zoning approval for The Hidden Ridge project over concerns about the number and type of residences planned, according to the Dallas Business Journal. The City of Irving wants Verizon to build the offices before it allows the apartments and it wants the majority of the apartments to be in high-rises.
The delay stems from the city’s desire to see less pure multifamily built.
Verizon told the newspaper that the planned apartments, townhouses and retail are critical to developing the kind of transit-oriented sleep/work/play projects that employers are now seeking.
The city will deliver its decision by the end of the month at the earliest. [DMN]
