A three-block stretch of Argyle Street in Uptown is being redesigned into a curb-free plaza that will be shared by motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. The project on Argyle between Sheridan Road and Broadway is supposed to encourage pedestrian traffic along the center of Chicago's Vietnamese community. Modeled after European plaza boulevard designs, the $3.6M project will raise the level of the street so that it's flush with the sidewalk, replace the asphalt topcoat with paving stones and make Argyle Street more accommodating for street fairs and outdoor cafes, said Transportation commissioner Rebekah Scheinfeld, according to the Chicago Tribune. Traffic on Argyle will flow one way eastbound during construction, which will be completed next summer. [Trib]
