A group of developers will present plans to redevelop the Lathrop Homes public housing development at a community meeting next week, the latest step in repeated attempts to repurpose the historic landmark.
Lathrop Community Partners, a group that includes Related Midwest, Heartland Housing and Bickerdike Redevelopment, and the Chicago Housing Authority submitted a development application last September calling for 1,200 residences, 50k SF of commercial space and 800 parking spots, Curbed reports. Previous attempts to redevelop Lathrop have been criticized by preservationists, affordable housing proponents and Ald. Scott Waguespack (32nd). Lathrop was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012, thwarting CHA's plans to demolish the existing structures. A 2012 report revealed Lathrop's 18% occupancy rate was the lowest among CHA's properties, and that the organization was collecting federal subsidies on these vacant units.
