Yesterday, Marina City, Bertand Goldberg's iconic twin corncob-shaped towers conceived as an early example of affordable housing in Chicago, was granted preliminary landmark status by the Commission on Chicago Landmarks. The commission unanimously approved the measure and will vote to grant permanent status next year before the measure moves to City Council, Crain's reports. The 65-story buildings were conceived as housing for the Building Service Employees International Union by its president, William McFetridge, who enlisted Goldberg to design the project.
