Noble Square's St. Boniface Church, vacant for nearly three decades, was spared a date with the wrecking ball last September when it was purchased. Now Stas Development is getting ready to breathe new life into the church.

Stas and its partner in the project, Marc Realty, presented an overview and timeline for repositioning St. Boniface at a public meeting last night. Stas is expected to submit its plans for the building by Feb. 8, with renderings to be revealed in another public hearing in March, Curbed reports.

Repurposing the church itself into 15 condos will be the final phase of the project. The first will be a new four-story building north of the church containing studio apartments and retail, and a 24-unit condo building will be built on a lot east of St. Boniface.

Preservationists like Preservation Chicago's Ward Miller consider the sparing of St. Boniface from demolition to be one of the more notable wins for historic and landmark preservation last year. If the permit process goes smoothly and there are no objections from residents, expect a June or July groundbreaking. [Curbed]
