North Branch Industrial Corridor's Future In Hands Of Plan Commission

Goose Island In The North Branch Industrial Corridor

The May 18 meeting of the Chicago Plan Commission will be one of the most anticipated in recent memory. The commission will determine the final say on eight developments across the city, the largest of them being the North Branch Industrial Corridor Framework plan.

The Department of Planning and Development solicited input from residents living near the North Branch Industrial Corridor, community groups, urban planners and real estate stakeholders for the past 11 months to craft a plan that will hopefully bring the future of the corridor into focus. Mayor Rahm Emanuel's willingness to relax zoning restrictions in the corridor, part of which is a planned manufacturing district, spurred discussions aimed at addressing concerns about the types and amount of development to happen in the corridor, which stretches along the Chicago River from Kinzie Street north to Fullerton Avenue.

If approved, the framework would serve as a map for several projects happening in the corridor, including Sterling Bay's massive redevelopment of the A. Finkl & Sons site.
