JDL Development unveiled initial renderings Tuesday for the development it wants to build on the parking lot across from Holy Name Cathedral. It is reaching to the sky with the project dubbed One Chicago Square, planning what would be Chicago's sixth-tallest building.

The renderings from Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture and Goettsch Partners call for a 74-story, 962-foot-tall building, with a proposed spire bringing the tower to a total height of 1,011 feet. That would make One Chicago Square just shorter than Aon Center and staring up at the nearby John Hancock Center. One Chicago Square, which would be bound by State, Dearborn and Superior streets and Chicago Avenue, is estimated to cost around $740M to build. HPA is a frequent JDL collaborator, having previously designed Halsted Flats, Six Forty North Wells, Eight Eleven Uptown, 1000 South Clark and the nearby luxury condo tower No. 9 Walton.

One Chicago Square also includes a 45-story tower, with a nine-story structure connecting the two buildings. Combined, One Chicago Square would house 795 apartments and 75 luxury condos ranging between $1.5M and $6M. At 1.5M SF, the plans would need a zoning change, and JDL is expected to pay $12M into the city's Neighborhood Opportunity Fund, which earmarks funds for infrastructure improvements in Chicago's disinvested neighborhoods. JDL bought the Holy Name Cathedral parking lot in April for $110M. Alderman Brian Hopkins, in whose ward One Chicago Square would be built, told residents nothing was set in stone yet.
