Serving as GM of the world's second largest commercial building (the 4.2M-SF Merchandise Mart) is no small feat, but  Lloyd Davidson says going green starts with low-hanging fruit. We snapped him at Index Publishing's Green Construction conference on Thursday. He says building management has cut energy use by 21%, with small, inexpensive measures such as turning off the exit sign lights during daytime hours and installing light and water sensors in the bathroom. Most projects yielded savings inside of two years. The Mart's newest initiative is contributing used NeoCon cabinets and furniture to the Rebuilding Exchange, a recycling center at 47th and Racine that reuses the products in homes.
From JLL, which recently finished the world's first multi-tenant LEED-EBOM at 550 W. Washington: Sarah WilliamsHelee Hillman, and Brooke Houghton. Helee recommends getting all tenants on the same page before starting a LEED project. And while stats, like 65% of US electricity is used in office buildings, are encouraging a lot of owners and managers to green, many more are doing it for the cost savings, she says.
