Fenway Center To Break Ground In January

After years of stops and starts, the Fenway Center has set a date to finally move forward.

Meredith Management, TH Real Estate and Gerding Edlen intend to break ground on the 1.1M SF project Jan. 30, Curbed Boston reports. The five-building project is one of Boston’s most anticipated, as it could become the first air rights project over the Massachusetts Turnpike since the Copley Place mall was built in the 1980s.

When complete, Fenway Center will include 650 housing units, 160K SF of office and 50K SF of retail. The first phase includes two land-based apartment buildings with 313 units. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation agreed in July to let developers begin on the easier component of the project. A costly deck with a 27-story residential tower over the Mass Pike is in longer-term plans.

Although the predecessor agency to the Boston Planning & Development Agency first approved Fenway Center in 2009, the development was plagued with challenges pertaining to financing and permitting for the ambitious project. Financing was finally secured in 2016 for the two-building first phase.
