Millennium Partners heard design complaints for its proposed Winthrop Square skyscraper, and it responded with a dramatically new design.

The developer submitted revised images this week to the Boston Civic Design Commission for its 115 Winthrop Square development. The refreshed design maintains a 690-foot structure, but it now looks from certain vantage points as though there are two distinct towers on the property. Millennium also enhanced what it is billing as the “Great Hall,” now closer in scope to its original scale as opposed to the second design submission some critics felt looked like a regular office lobby.

City leaders have stressed throughout the review process they were committed to getting a signature design for the property before construction would begin.

The Boston Planning & Development Agency was originally scheduled to approve the $1.3B project this week, but the review has been extended while Millennium continues to work on the design of the mixed-use development. Construction is still scheduled to begin later this year, pending BPDA approval.
