Desperately needed lab and office space could finally come to Kendall Square. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology revealed its initial concept Thursday for the Volpe Transportation Center site, the Boston Globe reports. Along with a new home for the Department of Transportation, the proposal calls for eight mixed-use buildings.
Cambridge City Councilor Leland Cheung previously suggested a 1,000-foot tower at the 14-acre site, but MIT’s presentation envisioned buildings in the “135-500+ foot” range. By completion, 1,400 housing units and 1.7M SF of office and lab space would be added to the neighborhood, according to university officials. Office space in Cambridge — the tightest office market in the country — averaged $65.26/SF for Q4 2016.
