Boston is inching closer to Millennium Tower 2.0.

Millennium Partners has begun to tear down the shuttered Winthrop Square parking garage in downtown Boston as part of its $153M deal with the Boston Planning & Development Agency to build a 725-foot mixed-use skyscraper on the land. Demolition crews have worked overnight for the last few weeks preparing the site for construction on the tower, the Boston Globe reports.

Millennium also owns the nearby Millennium Tower in Downtown Crossing, but the road to the soon-to-be sister skyscraper has not been an easy one. After the developer was chosen to buy the city-owned garage, the Federal Aviation Administration objected to its original 775-foot height. The proposal also endured a five-hour City Hall hearing in April, as park advocates voiced concerns regarding the impact by new shadow the tower would cast on Boston Common and the Boston Public Garden.

The city and state ultimately approved a home rule petition that permitted the tower but banned future developments from reaching heights that would cast shadow on the two parks as well as Copley Square in Back Bay.
