Wynn Touts Larger-Than-Expected Boston Workforce Ahead Of MGC Ruling

The fate of Encore Boston Harbor is still unknown, but it is still managing to be a leading employer in Massachusetts.

The $2.6B project under construction north of Boston in Everett, Massachusetts, has employed 5,276 union trade construction workers, Wynn Resorts announced Thursday. The figure is more than 25% higher than Wynn’s initial promise of 4,000 construction jobs at the site, the largest single-phase construction project in Massachusetts history. Wynn also said it has paid more than $250M in wages since construction began in 2016.

“Eighty-five percent of the 5,200 union construction workers hired by Encore Boston Harbor are from Massachusetts, which signifies that we are fulfilling our promise of hiring locally and keeping wages and spending close to home,” Encore Boston Harbor President Robert DeSalvio said in a prepared statement. “We are equally committed to hiring our 4,500 operational team members from local communities, and that process is underway.”

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is winding down an investigation into how much Wynn Resorts knew about former CEO Steve Wynn’s alleged sexual misconduct. The company has already made changes to its board and changed the name of the Boston casino from Wynn Boston Harbor to distance itself from its former leader. The MGC could still strip Wynn Resorts of its Greater Boston casino license.

Wynn estimates 80% of construction is finished, and it is spending $3M a day at the Everett construction site. If it gets to keep its casino license, Encore Boston Harbor is expected to open in June.
