Skyscrapers And Modular Housing: Birmingham City Living Is On The Move

Birmingham’s tallest residential tower, part of The Bank scheme, owned by real estate investment company Aprirose, has reached practical completion.The £35 million residential development in the heart of Birmingham city comprises 189 studio, one and two-bedroom properties and has already sold 90% of its apartments. The site also hosts retail space on the ground floor, private landscaped gardens and a concierge service.The 22-storey building standing 70 meters high is Aprirose’s first large scale residential scheme. Designed by Glancy Nicholls Architects the construction of the tower was managed by Midlands Based developer Regal (West Point) Ltd, a subsidiary of the Regal Property Group and delivered by Wates Construction.Aprirose are also developing a second residential tower at The Bank Scheme. This building comprises, 217 studio, one and two-bedroom apartments as well as a private gym and restaurant and is due to complete in the winter of 2019. The second tower, once complete, will stand at 33 storeys overtaking the first as the tallest residential tower in Birmingham. Birmingham’s residential scene is diversifying, with plans for modular housing revealed at the same time as plans for the city's second 100 metre-plus residential tower take a leap forward.

Aprirose is to develop the 33-storey block as part of The Bank scheme, between Brindleyplace and Broad Street. It is due to complete late next year. The tower plan is launched as the site's first completed block of 22 storeys is now 70% pre-sold, the Wolverhampton Express & Star reports.

The skyward thrust comes as Birmingham City Council-owned Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust reveals pioneering plans to trial modular housing.

A 50-home off-site manufactured housing development will begin in spring 2019 with a larger programme following in 2020. Contractors are being invited to work on five models already designed by the council, Construction Enquirer reports.

The move into modular housing coincides with a city council announcement that it is demolishing five examples of the advanced construction methods of the recent past.

A £43.3M scheme will see so-called "large panel system" blocks at the Druids Heath Estate demolished. Three further blocks will be refurbished as part of a 250-unit redevelopment, Inside Housing reports.
