Healthcare in the United States is in a state of transformation, and the industry's brick-and-mortar presence is feeling the impact.

Americans are increasingly accessing healthcare in retail centers, seeking ease and convenience, rather than making several trips to hospitals to see primary care physicians. The pending merger of CVS and insurer Aetna is only expected to push that trend further.

Meanwhile, technology is rapidly changing how surgery is performed and doctors provide treatment, and healthcare providers are bracing for a wave of baby boomers who will need aged care in the next few years.

Demographic shifts, mergers and acquisitions, digital health and developing technology were all discussed at Bisnow’s National Healthcare East event Thursday.

Panelists examined how and where hospitals should be built, the ways healthcare providers can remain competitive, and how the industry’s physical presence can be designed to provide the best access and care.
