Video of the Day: Next Future Modular Transportation Swarms the Commuting Hordes

Imagine combining mass transit and your own car into one efficient mode of transportation and it might look something like what you see in our Video of the Day.

Designed by Italian industrial designer Tommaso Gecchelin, the future transit system—he expects it out by the end of the decade—utilizes a network of efficient and coordinated, but individual, electric pods that pick up and drop off passengers on demand.

Each pod holds up to 10 people and is almost nine feet in length. The modular self-driving pods can link together like a bus if need be, and people order a ride by using a mobile app. Very Uber-esque.

In Tommaso's vision, these pods drive on existing roadways but there are no defined routes or needed physical infrastructure.

Instead, the cars use an advanced cloud-based routing system. It may seem extremely futuristic, but Tommaso hopes to have a viable product by 2020.
