The Secret on DC Roofs

Energy technology has become a hot focus area in DC. One of its best kept secrets: DC roofs are full of solar panels. You just can’t see them, says Standard Solar CEO Tony Clifford. His Rockville, Md., company recently installed solar panels on the historic DAR Constitution Hall (seen here), which joins the likes of buildings at American and Catholic universities and hundreds of homes. When the 70-person company put the solar array on the Energy Department roof in 2008 it was the largest between New Jersey and Central Florida. Now it’s the 6th or 7th largest. Interest has taken off in Maryland and DC because of various government incentives. The company is now eyeing DC’s recent RFP to install solar on 70 sites within the city.
