Tech Workforce Growing

The number of unemployed tech workers dropped to 2.7% during Q1, says recent Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers. Last year it was 3.5% but it’s still above the record low of 1.8% from Q2 '07. Tech consulting is actually setting big records for workforce size, weekly hours, and earnings, says a recent DICE report. Tech consulting added 17,200 new jobs in Q1, bringing the workforce to 1.7M people. Wages are averaging $42.17 per hour and tech consultants are working about 38.8 hours per week. They’re also seeing better pay raises than the rest of the tech population, up 4% year over year versus 3%. (This is all a long way of saying that if a tech consultant hands you their card at a bar, first round is on them.)
