Verizon To Close 7 Call Centers, Impacting About 3,200 Employees

Verizon Communications will close seven call centers in five states, the company announced earlier this week.

The closures are part of Verizon’s plan to consolidate customer operations in the US, and is likely to impact about 3,200 workers. “We are realigning our real estate portfolio and relocating these centers into other centers where we have extra capacity,” company spokeswoman Kim Ancin said. Call centers will close in California, New York, Connecticut, Nebraska and Maine, Fortune reports.

Earlier this year, Verizon agreed to buy Yahoo in a $4.8B deal —ending the giant web pioneer’s two-decade era as an independent company. The deal will include Yahoo’s real estate assets but exclude some intellectual property that will be sold separately, and Yahoo will maintain stakes in Alibaba Group Holding and Yahoo Japan for a combined market value of approximately $40B.
