Target Revamping Brick-And-Mortar, Opening Smaller Concept Stores In Push To Compete With Walmart

While Walmart is busy preparing for a showdown with Amazon, Target is doubling down on its own efforts to fend off Walmart.

The retailer will be remodeling more than 1,000 of its stores by the end of 2020 as part of a push to overhaul its operations, Bloomberg reports.

In addition to refurbishing its current locations, Target will be opening a number of new, smaller stores in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Philadelphia.

Target opened its eighth New York store in Manhattan’s Herald Square this week along with another 11 small-format stores. It plans to operate 130 small-format locations across the country by the end of 2019, up from its current 55. This is a stark contrast to 2016, when Target closed around a dozen stores across the U.S.

The newest store, along with three other New York locations, are offering same-day delivery and the retailer is currently testing a service that would allow customers to drive up to stores to pick up their online orders. The retailer is also upping its game by offering services such as Restock, which allows customers to order essentials like toothpaste and have them delivered the next day.
