Sales Growth Delays JC Penney Store Closures

JC Penney said it would close 138 stores by mid-June as the firm struggles to stay alive in the age of e-commerce, but a recent pickup in sales delayed those plans.

Company spokeswoman Daphne Avila said sales have been stronger than usual in the doomed stores ever since JC Penney announced they would close, Bloomberg reports. Avila said that is not unusual, as customers come out to get last-minute deals or simply out of nostalgia.

But recent sales gains are not enough to change JC Penney’s plans altogether. The company said the stores are now set to shutter on July 31, about a month later than originally announced.
