Goldman Sachs: Retailers With Strong Brands Are Well Positioned For E-Commerce

Retailers with distinct brands are well poised to take advantage of e-commerce, but those who sell products closer to commodities are in a tough spot, says a Goldman Sachs analyst.

Being on the upside of e-commerce is important—the sector is forecast to grow by 22% this year alone, CNBC reports. Retailers like Ralph Lauren and Nike are on the upside of that swell, due to strong brand images, whereas those like Kohl’s aren’t, since everything they sell can be sold by Amazon.

But a strong brand image isn’t a sure sign of smooth sailing. Ralph Lauren recently said it will close over 50 shops while laying off 8% of its workforce, and both Ralph Lauren and Nike, are down double digits in trading since the start of the year. [CNBC]
