Watch a Colossal Building Move Like Furniture

Prepare to be awed. If you were wondering what it looks like to move an enormous 880-ton building you're in luck. Douglas Development has released a time-lapse video of its recent feat with contractor Davis Construction: moving a historic New York Avenue building 34 feet to make room for the upcoming Square 450 project in Mount Vernon Square. And that's just a warm-up for the 1,100-ton building behind it that has yet be moved, the Washington Business Journal reports. You'll start to see the building shift about 15 seconds into the video, which shows the mammoth structure moving almost as if it were just a large piece of furniture. In reality, the process took days, with hydraulic jacks raising it all the way up, before additional "push jacks" shifted it five feet at a time. [WBJ]
